Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes (G1) - comments from runners' connections

*All entries 2-year-old colts

Takahisa Tezuka (trainer)
"He's right where we want him to be, mentally and physically. We're sure he can hold his own here. The pace tends to pick up in this race but I don't think he'll be distracted by it. He's not the quickest off the blocks, but we feel he's got a shot with the closing rush he has. If he races too far toward the front, it'll probably take away from him. Ideally, we'd like to see him travel somewhere in the middle of the pack before the jockey flips the on switch. It will help that he's actually raced at the course before."

Yasuji Munakata (assistant trainer)
"He ran a strong race last time just like in his first start at Nakayama. The good thing about him is he's always relaxed when he runs, never uptight. He switches on and off really well, takes off when you give him the green light. He's very sharp mentally as well as physically. There are a lot of good horses in the field, both colts and fillies, so we're all excited at the stable. (Craig) Williams will ride him for the first time but the horse's got no quirks of any kind so it shouldn't be a problem. I think we've got more than fair shot here."

Futoshi Komaki
"He doesn't work any differently than he has since his debut. He still doesn't completely have his legs beneath him so he doesn't run up the slope all that well. And because he doesn't have the strength yet, he can't handle the off track like in his last start. He has a lot of upside, I can tell that much. I'll be going into the race believing that my horse is the best of the lot."

Kojiro Hashiguchi (trainer)
"I have no doubt the last result (13th place, Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes) doesn't reflect the racehorse that he really is. If that were the case, he wouldn't have a graded win (in the Daily Hai Nisai Stakes) already. His time today wasn't good so I can't say I'm impressed. But the going was tough, and he's never been a great training horse. I'd say everything is pretty normal with him at the moment. We're out for payback so we hope he comes through here."

Tetsuzo Sato
"He used to not want to work out on his own. But he was moving really well last week. Slowly but surely, he's learning how to train on his own. His strengths are stamina and persistence so hopefully, his style will be to race toward the front and try to hold on. He seems to just give up when he races from behind so we want him positioned near the front."

Shozo Sasaki (trainer)
"I had my assistant work him but not to a point where he gets too excited. His action was good. He came up short in his last race, but his condition was good. If we can maintain his form, that'll be more than good enough for me. He's traveled up to Niigata before so the trip to the racetrack won't be an issue. He can adjust to any pace. But it'll be tough if we draw an outside barrier; that's the only thing that worries me. All we ask is that we draw inside of the sixth bracket."

Masato Nishizono (trainer)
"I was half-joking when I said I thought we might win the lot, but I'm thrilled we actually are through. Our odds were 2 out of 11! I couldn't be happier. Luck is part of the game. The opposition will be much tougher here, but I'm more excited than worried about going up against the best horses of this class. He hasn't done anything too fast because he's only had a week since his last start, but he's definitely on the rise after getting a race under his belt."

Hiroshi Kawachi (trainer)
"We were just trying to get him to settle today. He's put on weight after each start but it's been really good weight. He's never particularly impressive in workouts, always fairly low key. He ran into some traffic in his last race which was a good experience for him. He's shown to be a pretty tough racehorse."

Ryo Tokue (assistant trainer)
"He came in behind because the other horse is a really good training horse. Even before a race he wins, he doesn't work that particularly well. He's definitely in better form than he was for his debut, and if he runs well here, it'll really pave the way for his future."

Akio Tsurudome (trainer)
"He's moving well and he's only had a week in between his last start. He's as steady as he can be. I was really happy with the way he won his last race."

Hiroaki Sugiura (trainer)
"We wanted him to blow off a bit of steam by working out, not get overhyped. He worked fast last week, just going through the motions this week. He's fit, in just as good condition as the race before. He's a lot more relaxed now around the racetrack, and he doesn't drift to his left or to his right any more. But even if he settles smoothly, I'm not sure if he can accelerate the way he usually does when the race stretches out another 200 meters here."

Naosuke Sugai (trainer)
"He went through the motions and that was pretty much it today. I think he looks all right. The jockey (Ioritz Mendizabal) worked him last week and got a feel for him. All we're looking for is a clean race."

Meiner Robusto

Yutaka Takahashi (trainer)
"His action was good, very impressive. He's getting bigger and stronger with each race. He's really starting to fill out. You can ignore his last race (ninth, Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai Stakes). He shouldn't have a problem settling as long as he has someone to shadow. If he runs anything like he did in the Sapporo Nisai Stakes, we should be in the argument."

Hidetaka Otonashi (trainer)
"His time was probably a little faster than we would've liked, but we didn't push him in anyway. When this horse works fast, he tends to get worked up but not today. For him, the distance will be key."

Ninja

Toru Miya (trainer)
"He's giving off pretty good vibes, just like the way he was for his last race which he won. He had a hard time staying relaxed recently, but he ran really well last time. He's got the explosiveness to come from behind, and as long as he can settle, the mile shouldn't be an issue with him."

Shonan Lambsey

Yasunari Iwata
"He won his first race in a record, and the performance was good as well. He matches up with anyone else in the group. He's got that kind of quality."

Yasuhiro Shibuta (assistant trainer)
"The workout wasn't the greatest, but his movement, his response was fine. Watching him run the way he did today, I'm not the least bit worried. We had a lot to regret in his last race but he's really picked it up since, and we've been able to work him as much as we need to. Nakayama should suit his style, but he can keep up with any pace. We're counting on his toughness to get him through. He's got a very sharp closing rush so naturally, we'd love a firm going."

Snowdon

Yuichi Kitamura
"We wanted to make sure he finishes strong, and he was good. His stride keeps getting bigger and bigger, and it's even improved from his last race. He's showing all the signs of a much improve horse."

Katsuichi Nishiura (trainer)
"He had added 16 kg for his last race and it was because he had been hardened by the workouts we've been giving him this fall. He's also been doing some work in the pool which is helping him relax. He's just as good as he was for his last start, if not better."

Tokei Halo

Hisashi Shimizu (trainer)
"His workout partner likes to run but I'm not concerned. His movement has been smooth. I'm not worried about the distance. He comes on late which is the style we'd like to see him carry on with here."
