<at Nakayama Race Course>
April 13, 2009 (Monday)
GINOLAD (AUS, g9, dark bay or brown)
- jogged 1/2 lap, cantered 3/4 lap (dirt course) ⇒ practiced banks, schooled obstacles (steeplechase course) ⇒ strong canter 1 1/2 laps (dirt course)
ridden by Aaron Purcell from 7:36 to 7:55
"I was initially disappointed about the Pegasus Jump Stakes - I expected him to finish a few positions higher than he did. But he wasn't beaten very far and it wasn't a huge loss. The way he was ridden in that race probably didn't suit him, he was a lot closer to the speed than he normally is, and therefore his finish wasn't as strong as it usually is. His last two runs at a similar distance in Australia, had a similar result - he was beaten 10 or 15 lengths.
As for his condition after the race, he went for a walk the day after the race, and I rode him the day after that and his action was fine. He lost about 4 kilo's after the run but he's put that back on. No stiffness, no soreness anywhere and fitness-wise, he's pretty well back to his top.
Probably in the Nakayama Grand Jump, he'll be ridden a little further back and hopefully he can be stronger in the finish. Obviously the field will be a lot stronger, but he's strongest at the distance with the extra 1000 meters.
Craig, who's arriving later on, and I will decide on his training for this week - see what Craig feels best for the horse, but we'll gallop the horse on the grass on Thursday."
