Deep Impact's trainer Mr. Yasuo Ikee announced Wednesday, 11 October about retirement plan for his stable star. He said he was informed of the news by the owner Makoto Kaneko that this horse will retire at the end of this year.
The conditioner said that "We came home from France proud of Deep Impact's effort in the Arc de Triumph last week. Mostly happy that he came out of the race in good condition. We were just planning his autumn campaign in Japan and possible return to Paris next year."
About this sudden retirement, trainer Yasuo Ikee said, "Mr. Kaneko called me to inform that Deep Impact will retire at the end of this year and will become a stallion next year. I realize this day had come one day, but must admit I feel sad about this sudden report. But, it might be fortunate for Deep Impact to become a stallion when he is still fit to a certain extent.
About the plan for the final season of his carrier, he will target autumn Triple Crown races for the older horses Tenno Sho (autumn) (JPN G1), Japan Cup (G1) and Arima Kinen (JPN G1), all considering he stays fit to run. We have to always keep in mind that although he has become National icon, he is still a thoroughbred, so being too greedy is no good. Everything should let the horse come first."
Jockey Yutaka Take who has ridden every start aboard Deep Impact said, "I can't think of a word since I have just heard this news. It is very sad to think that I can not ride him again after this year. I was certainly looking forward to revenge in next year's Arc de Triumph. As a jockey, I understand I am not in position to comment on the horse's future plan. I will do my best to show his ability in his remaining races." he could'nt conceal his surprise.
From next year, he will stand at the Shadai Stallion Station. Deep's children will be active on the turf in 2010 the earliest.
