THE 48TH MAINICHI BROADCAST SWAN STAKES (GII)
Claiming his third grade race victory, last year's Best Two-Year-Old Colt COSMO SUNBEAM with Masaharu Honda aboard, dominated this year's SWAN STAKES with SIDEWINDER following in second and WIN KLUGER in third.
Quickest out of the gate, GALLANT ARROW gunned for the lead to set the pace till falling out of contention at the upper stretch. 11th favorite COSMO SUNBEAM raced up close to the pace while three wide, swung out seven wide at the top of the lane, rallied fiercely to surge ahead to win by 1/2 length over SIDEWINDER in the final strides. Favorite-of-the-field SIDEWINDER saved ground close to the rear of the pack, found room to make his bid after the final turn but lacked a further closing response to finish second. It was another head back to 13th favorite WIN KLUGER in third, and another nose back to MEINER HEARTY in fourth.
